In technologically advanced countries, the so-called "knowledge economy" (research and innovation in goods and services) is gaining a significant share of GDP and also ensures future economic growth.
In this competitive and sustainable medium and long-term economic development, the project focuses on "The Colmenar Viejo City of Knowledge," as a strategic commitment of the Madrid region to help position itself among the most competitive regions worldwide.
Accordingly, the Community of Madrid and Colmenar Town Council, have agreed (through a partnership agreement) to promote the "Colmenar Viejo City of Knowledge” as a "technopolis” providing pleasant spaces for scientific / technological plants, business centres, service areas, residential areas and leisure facilities, forming a functional whole, harmonizing its various uses and respecting the environment.
By the end of 2006, the first conceptual design work for the City of Knowledge was begun with a feasibility study to guide and determine, among other factors, areas of strategic and priority activities to support, stages of infrastructure implementation, and a thorough analysis of key issues in a project of this magnitude.
At the moment work is being carried out in spatial design and the identification of priority areas for activities to spearhead innovation.
